JA Garland Talks Juggling Two Full-time Careers

JA: I’d like to start out by saying I am very lucky to enjoy two such rewarding careers. Working as a firefighter is mentally and physically challenging, but at the end of each shift, I know I’ve made a difference.  The give merits the gain. Working as a writer doesn’t have as immediate gratification. Long hours are spent trying to perfect a sentence. No one knows the time you’ve labored to get your, ‘ah ha!’ moment. So it’s those surprise kudos reader emails that make it worth the sacrifice.

Working in a predominately male orientated career field has given me an insight into how men think, act, do. I’ve been around them long enough that they view me as one of the guys. Which means their filters are gone, their shields are down. This allowed me to capture the male essence in my writing. I think it makes my male characters more believable, more realistic.  Sometimes a little too realistic with all their flaws, lol!

About the Author:
Writing urban fantasy under the pen-name J.A. Garland, Jennifer is a professional firefighter in the state of California. Jennifer is married and has two children, both of whom are as different as night and day. A graduate of Cogswell Polytechnical with a degree in Fire Administration, Jennifer always knew she wanted to be an author. (Except for a brief two month period after watching the movie "Top Gun," when she wanted to be a fighter pilot).

Jennifer admits she is an addicted trail runner, mostly because she is a devout consumer of all things cheese puff. If she misses you at the next mud run, you can come back here to see what's new in the world "where fantasy becomes reality."
